Student Finance England

We know you may need some financial assistance, and here’s a reminder about what to do :

  • Once you’ve accepted a fee-funded place, you can apply for a tuition-fee loan and/or a maintenance loan from Student Finance England.
  • The tuition-fee loan is paid directly to your training provider (NIoT@TIE) by Student Finance England. Tuition-fee loans are not means-tested, so you should be able to cover your course fees in full, regardless of your household income.
  • You may also be eligible for up to £12,667 as a maintenance loan, to help cover living costs while you train. It is worth checking if you are eligible.
  • For more finance support provided by Gov.uk
  • Finance FAQs can be found below.

We are listed on SfE. Please type in National Institute of Teaching as well as your subject course code – it should appear as NIOT@Trinity Institute of Education. Choose the course relevant to you using the subject code from your application to us.

If you are a bursary subject, you will also receive this through Student Finance England. If you do not want to access student finance for tuition fees but still want access to a bursary, complete an application but enter £0 for the amount you want as a loan.

Secondary Bursaries and Scholarships

Quite a few secondary subjects have bursaries attached to them; some have scholarships too. You can’t receive both.

You can apply for a scholarship for the following:

Physics – Institute of Physics
Chemistry – Royal Society of Chemistry
Mathematics – The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications
Computing – The Chartered Institute for IT
Modern Foreign Languages – British Council

If you are not successful, you will still receive a bursary. We will complete your bursary application using the information provided in your starter form.

The bursary is tax-free and will be paid in 10 instalments over the PGCE year, starting in October 2025

Below are a list of FAQs regarding finance and secondary bursaries:

Finance FAQs

From the start of the 2025/26 academic year tuition fees for teacher training programmes with NIoT will be £9,535 for full time teacher training courses and £7,145 for part-time teacher training courses.

Tuition fees for UK/Home students may change in line with government policy and will be subject to the maximum fee limits set out in Regulations.

On the fee-funded (tuition-fee) route you will be required to pay your course fees. The fees that you are due to pay can be split into three termly payments or they can be paid in full at the start of the academic year.

You can pay your tuition fees in one of two ways:

1. Via Student Finance England. Funding will be sent directly to the NIOT once your attendance has been confirmed. Confirming your attendance will also trigger any maintenance loans or grants that are attached to your application.

2. Via private invoicing. An invoice will be sent to you for the full amount of £9,535 or £7,145. You must pay the entire invoice or the first termly instalment by the dates set on your payment plan – issued by NIoT.

3. You can also pay through your bursary if your subject has one. Please let us know and we will request your invoices to be set up for this format.

No, Tuition–Fee payments must be made via bank transfer. No other forms of payment will be accepted.

Student Finance can take a minimum of six weeks for applications to be processed. We urge you to apply as soon as possible, as undergraduate applications are greatly delayed in the summer term. If your tuition fees are not received in time, you may not be able to start on time which will have a negative impact on your training year.

The National Institute of Teaching is the provider of your ITT course. You will then need to pick your subject specific course, according to your region:

NIOT@Trinity Institute of Education

Remember to have the subject course code at hand you used for your application.

We are not allowed to use your bursary in this way. The DfE bursary will be paid to you in accordance with the DfE guidelines, in ten equal instalments from October 2025 for full time trainees, or pro-rata for part-time trainees, until July 2026. If you wish to use your bursary to make payments towards an invoice you are free to do so, however you will have to arrange this independently in line with the deadlines provided. Please let us know as invoices can be set up accordingly.

Part time trainees do not get a bursary over the summer, their payments will resume in September 2026. The bursary/scholarship will be spread over the amount of time they have selected i.e. to following Christmas or Easter.

No. A new starter form hyperlink will be provided in your welcome pack, please ensure this is completed by your onboarding appointment. We will use the bank details provided to set up your payments.

Any bursary payments will be paid to you from around October 2025 until July 2026. Please note that if this falls on a bank holiday, the funds will clear on the next working day. A schedule of payments will be sent to you at the start of term.

Part time trainees will be paid in September of their second year.

No. You will only receive the higher level of funding if you can provide confirmation from the organisation that you are a member e.g. Royal Society of Chemistry. Please click here for all the DfE scholarships available.

If you are successful with a scholarship, please send your confirmation letter to contactus@tie.trinitymat.org

Search for Book my Assessment on a search engine and you could be eligible for support.

This can include needs such as diabetes, dyslexia, ASD, mental health, etc.

No. As a Tuition-Fee funded trainee, the government has provided a bursary for your subject to help with living costs. You are not permitted to be in paid employment by your placement school during the length of your programme. If you are struggling with finances, please speak with your Tutor or Head of ITT.

No. Only trainees who are Tuition-Fee funded are permitted to apply for Student Finance.

You will be paid monthly on the same day as the rest of the school staff from 27th September 2025 until 27th August 2026 via bacs. You will need to make sure we have your updated bank details on record to make this happen.

No, the cost must be covered by the Apprentice privately. This will cost £1,200.

“TIE made the course feel achievable by breaking everything down into digestible steps, while still challenging us to think deeply and reflect constantly. The structure and support were spot on, everything from resources to regular check-ins helped keep the momentum going, even when things felt overwhelming.

They never let you fall behind and were always there to guide you back on track.”

Zoe Crossland

Secondary - Maths

“They provided an exceptional amount of support both for the PGCE and the in-school placements. Sue, Emma, Katy, and Elaine were always available to talk to, alleviating any worries I had throughout the year. The community at TIE always felt very inclusive and personalised. They provided me with all the right tools to successfully complete the training year, especially for the PGCE element. From examples, to booklets of information, to step-by-step guidance, they were always there to help everyone.”
